Lifecycle Stage
A lifecycle stage is a contact or company property that records where a record sits in your marketing and sales journey. It usually progresses through subscriber, lead, marketing qualified lead, sales qualified lead, opportunity, and customer. The point is to give every team a shared, consistent way to segment, route, and report on people.
Lifecycle stage is most associated with HubSpot, but the concept applies to any CRM or marketing platform. Records usually move forward as they engage. A newsletter subscriber who requests a demo becomes a lead, then an opportunity once sales is working the deal. Stages power automation, list segmentation, and funnel reporting like conversion rate between each step.
A common pitfall is letting stages move backward or get set manually in inconsistent ways, which corrupts funnel metrics. Keep transitions automated and one-directional where possible, and don't confuse lifecycle stage with lead status, which tracks the granular sales activity within a single stage.
