Double Opt-In
Double opt-in is an email sign-up flow that requires a subscriber to take two steps: submitting their address, then clicking a confirmation link in a verification email before they are added to a list. This second step proves the address is real and that the owner genuinely consented to receive messages.
It contrasts with single opt-in, where contacts join the moment they submit a form. Double opt-in trims fake, mistyped, and bot-submitted addresses, which improves list hygiene, lowers bounce and spam-complaint rates, and supports compliance with consent-based laws such as GDPR. The trade-off is a smaller list, since some people never click the confirmation email.
To measure it, watch your confirmation rate, the share of submitters who complete the second step. A low rate may signal a confusing email, a missing message, or deliverability problems. Related terms include email deliverability and hard bounce.
